Canada's Labour Market Numbers February 2026

Canada’s newest employment numbers were released today and the headline is not encouraging.
According to the latest report from Statistics Canada, Canada lost 84,000 jobs in February, and the unemployment rate increased to 6.7%.

In conversations I have been having with companies across Canada recently, many organizations are not necessarily cancelling hiring plans, but they are slowing decisions and waiting for more clarity in the market.

Between trade uncertainty, tariffs, and geopolitical tensions globally, a number of businesses appear to be taking a “wait and see” approach before committing to new hires.

After 28 years in the construction equipment industry, I’ve seen hiring cycles like this before. Companies may pause decisions temporarily, but the demand for experienced leadership and technical talent usually does not disappear.

Are hiring decisions slowing down in your industry, or are companies still moving forward with recruitment plans?
